Went to Seacliff today and fishing in front the lifesaving club. No wind and the water really calm. The water crystal clear.. but managed to land one 30cm bream, 2 YFW 34c and 37cm which is the biggest YFW i ever caught so far. I may caught more if i didn't lost my rig so i decide to go home.

Heres a letter I saw on the Halco Tackle website by Tim Carter which kind of sums up the whole debarcle.I never thought I would get to the point that I had to write this.As a responsible recreational angler for over 40 years, I have stuck by government imposed size and bag limits, fisheries closures to allow for spawning aggregations and been involved in scientific fish tagging programmes to name but a few aspects of my fishing life.I have always stuck by the rules but today seals the day that I b...ecome an anarchist in relation to fisheries management.Today, federal environment minister Tony Burke proclaimed a huge area of Australia's waters as a series of marine parks around the country. While green groups will no doubt be dancing in the streets over the move, what about recreational anglers in all this? Commercial fishers will be precluded from fishing in these areas as well, but they will receive financial compensation for the exclusion – up $100 million taxpayers dollars worth, what’s the story for recreational anglers? You got a giant kick up the arse, that's what!Todays proclamation caps personally, a three year long series of supposed negotiations with the minister and his department.Unfortunately my report card scores the minister a complete and utter fail for this sham of a process. If there was real science behind the move, I could have lived with that, however it is not and never has been about science. It's about political payback to the green lobby for the ability of federal Labour to govern this country. It’s about the power that overseas funded, green groups have over the minister and his department and the absolute treachery and goalpost changing tactics they used to get this through. The spin and plain untruths of the green lobby has been breath taking, but the most startling thing I think, has been the conduct of minister Burke. He has even today insisted recreational anglers are unaffected by these MPA’s. A total bare faced lie I say!!!Areas of the Coral Sea, the Rottnest Trench and Geographe Bay are just three areas where recreational anglers are very much affected, and the minister knows it too. There are plenty of other examples out there but these ones in particular are the worst. He doesn’t have the courage to own up to these ones and recreational anglers, the little guys in this game have found it impossible through the media scrum to get the message out.Once the minister released a draft of this plan, leaders of the Australian fishing community including myself met again with the minister in Canberra to try and thrash out a plan to fix the major sticking points of concern to recreational fishermen. In that meeting, minister Burke admitted to us that he had made a mistake over the Rottnest Trench decision and stated that he would get back to us once he had a chance to have a look at the situation.Shock and horror, he didn’t and today locked us out of an area that we have fished since the late 1940’s. The fact that the Navy can run our clapped out, noisy submarines through the area with no restriction, naval surface vessels live firing and commercial shipping racing through the area seems to be ok but put a handful in reality of recreational anglers in small boats trolling the top 3 m of the water column is obviously a major risk. If it wasn’t so serious you would roll off the couch laughing about it. It’s straight out of “Yes Minister”. Guess what minister, today myself and others I know have said enough. No amount of green paint on a map is going to stop me or many others here in WA fishing this area. No science, no lock out, I say.Tell me who is going to police the area, located over 40NM off the coast. Are you going to run aircraft around a little square in the ocean to catch us out? At what cost to the taxpayer? Patrol boats might be another option open to you, but who then will stop all the illegal boats that are freely entering our waters on a daily basis. I forgot, your government tore down laws that effectively stopped the boats and has left us with almost no border protection – well done Labour. Your green mates are very pleased with the result though. The biggest tragedy in this is whole saga is that the minister had the opportunity to work out a number of these major sticking points through a properly negotiated settlement. Now all he has left anglers with is bitterness and contempt. It’s a great pity and indicative of many of the federal governments failings. Finally Minister, today my friends and I say to you - stick your green MPA maps where they fit, you can’t and won’t be able to stop us in practice. I will see you out there some time!! Tim Carter

Ok - Ill tell you this little fishing story and let you decide:Bob's kitchen - N.E. about 5 knots - hot / overcast / offshore - not much swell - clearish water.....Spotted a great hole accompanied to a break in the second sandbar so I lobbed a fresh s/t right on the edge of the sandbar and waited - and waited....20 or so minutes then started walking away fom my rod....I was about 20 feet away from it (walking away) when my rod tip just moved a bit and then snapped back to nothing again....i stopped and watched - nothing - started walking away again and again - just a small movement (a pull foreward) then it let go again....I pulled my line in and the s/t was chewed to bits - and almost gone.....I replaced it and threw it in the same spot again.....Waited ---- waited ------then walked away ------same thing! straight away! soon as I walked away - the rod tip just moved.....What the!!!!!Pulled my line in again - and this time the s/t was chewed but it had the teeth marks of a good sized jewy so it was on......The next cast i did the same thing - waited for a little while (10 mins) but this time when I walked away I loosened my drag so when i walked away I took the line with me - rod in the rod holder but as I walked off I had the line coming off the reel and coming with me keeping the line tight - same same - 20 odd feet away the tip started flicking - I yanked the line and all hell broke loose! -------- so the point is - this fish was watching me!!! They arent that dumb.....That changed the way I fished up there - from that moment on I went stealth - and caught a helluva lot more fish.....I cut out all the un natural aspects of my presence there eg. noise / smell / (i washed my hands in the sand and salt before baiting up) fresh bait / (fresh dead) livies dont seem to work - and kept away from my rod and sat closer up near the sandhill....And caught more fish!!Sorry about the quality of the photo but this was a long time ago and it was the days before digital - this is the fish and you can see the conditions - still this fish was watching me - it was aware of my presence there......Even though its a long way from nowhere to catch fish you still have to follow the basics of jewie fishing....(if you want to catch fish)....

I don't really want to start a 'war' by posting either but I've gotta put my opinion on the table on this topic as well.I understand the community concerns that it can be perceived as dangerous but I'd argue that the 100+ years of shark fishing history off the Adelaide metro coastline entirely negates any concerns of apparent danger. If it is as dangerous as people claim then why have we seen zero shark attacks which are directly attributable to people fishing for sharks?? In 100+ years? I've struggled to even find one incident in any state in Australia. This should put to rest any fears anyone has about fishing related shark attacks in Australia. Reading this shows that almost every attack is related to either surfing' date=' diving or snorkelling and usually well away from non-surf beaches and beaches lacking reef structure. I also note that we haven't banned any of those activities.I hardly think a Bronzie with a hook in his mouth is in any position to think about what's he's having for lunch. Since most sharks are opportunistic feeders, it stands to reason that they would take a fresh dead bait presented by an angler [i']before[/i] taking a human as it represents a much easier feed for a shark. The simple realities of the situation are that the sharks are already in the water with the swimmers. Fishing for them does not attract them nor make them more likely to attack a person. History has proven this to be the case beyond all reasonable doubt.Yes it does happen to be the law now but from my point of view it's a law which is not backed by any evidence or science and it has been put in place simply because of the perceived danger, which is not really good enough IMO. There's a perceived danger that I might get attacked by a dog on the way home, but we haven't banned all dog ownership. Maybe we should, considering there were 6000 dog attacks between 2001 - 2003 alone which required hospitalization. More than seven times the total amount of shark attacks ever recorded in Australia.

Penn has been distributed by Jarvis Walker for many years, but since they were bought by Pure Fishing a few years back they will soon take over the distribution of the Penn brand here in Australia. It seems that JW is clearing their Penn stock out and the rumour is that when Pure Fishing takes over the prices will go right back up again. So buy em up now.

It's just Jenny Moxham! Read any animal based story in the newspapers, and you will find letters to the editor from her on the subject, condemning anyone who isn't a vegetarian, vegan or animal liberationist!Do not send her an email, as you will find it impossible to talk sense or reason with her. She is blinded by her own views and will not entertain or listen to any voice which disagrees with her. She's an animal rights activist who constantly writes letters to newspapers, promotes being vegetarian and claims to be a poet with her animal rights poems.I dont let things like that get under my skin. She has her views, which she airs constantly, but I also have my own views........and I have my legal rights! I play by the law, I promote the positive side of what we are doing, and I treat my captures as humanely as I can! I have no qualms about my sport, I do not apologise for my sport, and I have no reason to feel guilt or shame! The law is on my side, we are permitted to catch fish with hook and line, fish are exempt from the prevention of cruelty to animals act, we follow regulations set by the government when persuing our sport. There are reasons for ALL of this, and Jenny Moxham also fails to acknowledge ANY of this, while trying to anthropomorphise (ascribe human emotions and feelings onto) dumb animals!Should we all follow fisheries legislation, respect the environment and treat our captures humanely, all Jenny Moxham and her little friends can do is continue to rant, rave and push their own views, while the law supports us and our right to fish, while protecting us from harassment, threats, violence or interference from the likes of Jenny Moxham and her little friends!I am not cruel, I do not torture! I am a fisher, a hunter and a meat eater though! I take pride in my efforts to treat my captures humanely, I respect my quarry, I follow the law, I do no wrong, I will not bow to her accusations!Let Jenny go eat her lentils, write her letters and dream up her poems! In the meantime I'm gonna catch some seafood, cook a steak, shoot a bunny rabbit, crack a few eggs, pour some milk and tuck in to a cheese platter, coz just like Jenny, I'm entitled to MY lifestyle choices too!

I use mono in the surf ,in fact only use braid for certain things.Just a personal choice, try untangling 5 kilos of kelp and berry weed off a rig down at salt creek... need a black belt in macrame with braid your best friend is a good old fashioned knife Maybe ok over FWC surf beaches with clean gutters and you only have to plonk a bait 40 metres out in a gutter, but in general would give it a wide berth off the sand.As for that berkely nanofil yuk probably be the worst choice of line not only for Surf but almost anything else ,cant stand the stuff, feel cheated after reading all the hype, and forked out 30 odd bills of hard earned for what looked like weak cotton which gave nothing but grief!

Just thought I'd point something out which bears a lot of similarity to this.In the case of cockling, if you go in a group, usually someone stays back to count the cockles, check the size or even just go there to enjoy the beach. There's always an inactive participant. ie. they do not go out there to dig for the cockles. However, the bag limit for the cockles here applies to the number of people you have in your big group, not the people who are out there digging for cockles. Now if you agree with this cockling bag limit, you shouldn't have any issues with this squidding scenario with Jewie because his dad most certainly participated in one way or another by cleaning the boat of the squid ink, landing the squid or even placing the squids in the correct buckets so jewie and his mate wouldn't lose any squidding time. His duty in this case would be similar to that of a cockling partner who sits on the beach and counts the cockles or checks for the size.
