Not saying i'm a pro, VERY far from it.
But 6 years ago I caught my first 2 snapper in metro waters. The next 2 seasons were relatively consistent (at best maybe 25 fish).
The past 3-4 years if we came back with 12 fish total, i'd say we'd be lucky (with the largest being a 2-3kg specimen).
I've been saying it for many years, REC fishers have a very minor if not nothing to do with the demise of the fish stocks.
Not all of us catch 1 let alone our limit when we go out. Not all of us have the big boats that can go out when the sea is average. The average REC fisher works 5-6 days a week and is limited to go out when the weather is good (mainly during the week it seems of late).
All the 'Pro's' know where the fish are. They do it everyday when seas permit. But the long liners are a different kettle of fish.
Once the sun goes down, they do what they want and where they want. I've seen them long line at Grange and at the Glenelg TR when season opens for the first 4 weeks.
These should be off limits to the long liners. These were created for the Rec fishers!
The government should be creating man made reefs all around the coast to give ALL species a chance to hide  and reproduce rather than select places. Only a matter of time till the pro's find them with the quality of sounders that are out today and only getting better.
And it should be the same with the PRO crab boat too. Makes me sick seeing 50ft+ boat hauling 2x2m cages every 200m so close to metro waters.
This too has repercussions to the snapper stocks as its a food source for the snapper.
    Ok end of rant.

Well they can't put the blame onto the recreational fisher with the restrictions already placed on them,, perhaps it's time to have a hard look into the professional side of fishing a little more..
    cheers

From what i'm aware Most of the tackle stores send customers reels to get serviced by Rob Wilson at South Oz Rods. If it is a Shimano Reel or Daiwa Reel depending on whats needed they get sent back to the company and they service them.

    I completely agree with this.
There's plenty of bream in those places, so not much sense in a stocking program.
A mulloway stocking program would get my attention. Better yet, effective management of mulloway in the Coorong, giving them a chance to replenish themselves naturally, would be even more interesting.

Thank you to all that participated in the competition and to those that also put in some hard work trying to work it all out.
I hope you at least enjoyed, but very frustrating, competition and hopefully had a bit of fun along the way.

Probably got around a month or so until the mullet swing in fully too.

Try the beaches at West Lakes. Tirana Reserve for one has mullet often. Simple paternosta rig with two hooks and a basic mince and semolina mix. Just a light sinker with berley cage or attach a berley cage to the sinker. Bread in the berley cage is all you need. No need to cast far either. Simple fishing.

This is for rivers and still water scenarios

I do 99% of my mullet fish from an elevated position, like a jetty. I Berley them up to the surface so I can watch them eat the bait

I use them for livies, so I want to get 20 really quick.

Small 3mm squares of chicken or prawn on a size 12 long shank hook. And I use a "Flatty Flicker" or just hold the hook upside down really firmly and 9 times out of 10, the mullet will wriggle off the hook, so I dont have to touch them and mess with their slime coat.

I wouldnt catch many at all without a bread crumb and canned cat food berley - I mix it with water in a bucket so its just sloppy - And add a 1/4 of a teaspoon at a time, once I've got the school to my feet. I try to time my bait landing just after the half teaspoon of berley hits the water. I keep it unweighted so it sinks at the same rate as the berley.

If there is no wind - I dont use a float but if the wind gets up, the float is mainly there to add casting distance and stop my unweighted bait being dragged around by the wind.

I have found a gently sinking bait is much more effective in an active berley trail - A static bait sitting under a float, can be all but ignored, while a moving bait will be doing all the damage - So I keep my bait moving by raising it up and letting it sink. The mullet I chase love a moving bait.

Even pulsing it back like a soft plastic, can help get the schools attention. They seems really keyed into movement and when one chases it, it fires up the school and they compete much harder for the bait.

Finding a spot where they naturally hang out is also very important to my methods - If I get things right - I can have the school at my feet in under 2 mins - some days it seems like they were watching the first spoon of berley flying through the air

I had a pair of Tonic Sunglasses given to me as a gift 1 month ago, I have looked after my glasses in past. I found the new sunglasses with glass lenses in me hip bag 3 days ago with a shattered lens, I can not work out how this had happened as I have the bag on my most of the time. I have always had sunglasses as I have had boats for 20 years and never broken a leans yet some have fallen out and scrached. I took them back to the supplier and they said there is not warranty on the lenses, I would not recommend the Tonic sunglasses.

Nice job, controlling the heat is very hard in such a small smoker.  I personally highly recommend a wet brine over night as it holds moisture.
But i also love it when its over done and has some jerky chew too it.
Each to there own! Practice, practice..

Not sure what species seaweed worms are. I agree they look very similar to common earthworms, and hence I am quite sure they are in the class oligocheata. I have used garden worms (tiger worms and earthworms) for bream successfully in the salt but haven't got any whiting on them yet.

These days I catch my own beach worms usually. It is a steep learning curve and it took 10 trips before I could get my first one. I can usually get 8 to 10 worms an hour.

I certainly don't have this done pat by any means, hell, only my 3rd go - over past 18 months
So I filleted the Tommies and butterflied the Gar and put them in a brine of 1lt water, 1/4 cup salt and 1/4 cup of brown sugar and in the fridge for 24 hours+.
Got my 'deluxe' Mojiko smoker ready but only had Samba Poultry/Pork chips, so they had to do.
Smoke vent was only just open a tad and smoking well.
Thought maybe 45 minutes but this 30 minutes in, so them off.
Look over done to me compared to other that have a darkish tan, but they tasted ok - a little dry maybe.
The Gar didn't have as much darkness to it and the taste was milder than the tommies.
Practice, Practice and Practice   ......  and catch more fish would help too

Do they keep well? Say if I wanted to get them one day and fish the next couple of days?
