Personally i think samaki make the best value for money rods i own a k2 6lb which is a beautiful rod. But my absolute pride and joy is my ZRT a 6kg rod i use for flicking plastics for mullys. Absolutely amaz5!! Lighter than most bream rods insanely crisp feel and looks the part to with its gold blingy bits lol.

If there is a draw then the largest fish or least small fish will decide the final winner.     21cm - 35cm 2 points 36cm - 45cm 4 points 46cm - 55cm 6 points 56cm - 65cm 8 points 66cm - 75cm 10 points 76cm and above 12 points
Longest overall salmon for one runner up prize.

As a backup we are having a few options for the last runner up prize which relies heavily on the members reports. These include the worst trip, best by-catch, most kms traveled and the most trips all chasing salmon.

This comp is dependent on good salmon reports from members who would like to take part so please get as much information in your reports, try to take some nice clear photos and get right into the Strike Hook spirit and get as many fishos as we can chasing salmon for the comp.

The comp ends on August 31st 2016 and is open to anyone and everyone in South Australia!

    Good luck everyone

I enjoy jigging now for most species out in the boat. More often than not I'll start jigging before bait fishing, and there's been plenty of trips where we've got our limit of snapper without even having to touch a bait.

I grew up around that area, fishing is tops. Trinity beach is very close to the mouth of the Barron River, bream, barra, trevally, flathead. Live bait is what I used to get the big fish with and used a cast net as its legal, 5 min live bait solution lol.
You might get on to a few Mangrove Jacks further upstream around the mangroves but the sand flies are shocking so don't forget your anti-bug cream.
If you can travel though I wouldn't waste time only having 2 days, the Daintree River is my favorite area to fish land based. Koala Beach Resort is cheap and walking distance to the mouth of the river and rocks that has deep water fishing and attract big fish.

Hey S&H crew😆 have an awesome Fishing trip planned and who better to tell than you lot! Leaving in two weeks time on a dedicated Fishing trip to cairns. In this trip i have booked two days with a fishing guide with a charter mob called blackout sports fishing. I will be getting as much variety in as possible fishing with jigs, poppers, plastics, livies and any other style i can cram in the two days. Will be both estuary/ river fishing as well as off shore reef. The options are endless however a big GT on popper is the ultimate goal, big barra would be nice as well. Looking at there photo gallery has got me beyond excited!!! Hopefully should have plenty of crazy Fishing pics to show off soon. Anyone done a similar trip?? Any advice would be much appreciated as this is costly trip and i want to get the most out of it. Im sure ill be in good hands however, reviews all seem to be positive. I will also do my own thing land based in the days besides the charter trip. Staying at a place called trinity beach. Watch this space 🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟

Well my mate asked me along another Kangaroo Island trip last holidays! Arrived back home last week with an experience we will never forget.

When we first arrived on Hanson bay, we got out of the car for a quick stretch and collected some fresh air on the front porch. We looked at the first bay to see a massive patch of "seaweed/reef" that was never there before? After a long analysis, I realised it was a salmon school that was incredibly close to shore!!    We quickly started to unpack but my mates mum told us to grab the rods and go so we did!
It was the closest school I have ever seen and the salmon weren't small! We hooked up every cast for a good 25 minutes before the school moved out deeper. Biggest went 70cm and they were all around 65-70cm. Awesome fun while it lasted and we already collected a feed. lol

The next day we woke up at 6:30am to find another huge school (possibly the same one) being chased in close by a couple of hungry seals!
Same thing happened, we ran down and hooked up every cast for a solid 25 minutes before the school moved back out. Crazy stuff!!

After had some time to relax and eat, we headed down to the river and realised that it was full of feeding bream!!! We used surface lures (OSP Bent Minnows) for the majority of the time, landing dozens of healthy fish including a 36.5cm one!

Went back home for dinner and played a couple of board games before I headed back to the river for a solo flick. Caught another half a dozen or so before dark.

The next day we woke up early once again, but this time we couldn't see any schools so we headed straight for the river. Within the first half hour of using surface lures, they seemed a bit slow because it was freezing!! So we switched to Zman grubz, cranka crabs and dragon maggots. This turned out trumps and we found ourselves catching one almost every cast in one specific spot.   Not huge but they were fun little fish.

After about 3-4 hours, we went back to the shack to get our energy back, when my mates mum comes in and informs us of a big salmon school on the second bay! We grabbed the big rods and ran down to give it a suss. Standing on the cliff at the start of the second bay, I spotted the school! It was out far unfortunately so we waited (impatiently).

After a long wait, we realised there was another smaller school further down the bay, but this one was closer!
We followed it around the place, landing a fish every few casts into the school before one fish broke my hook! For the next 20 minutes, I was casting into the school with a hookless slug and watching them chase it all the way to the shore. It was an amazing sight.

After the school moved out far and wide, we  decided to call it a day as we were buggered...

The next day, we headed north towards Kingscote! Expecting the best, it ended up being rough and windy at the jetty but we fished it anyways. It was real slow but we managed to land 2 tiny squid (kept for bait), a few red mullet, a leather jacket and a troutie!

On the way home, we stopped at Vivvone bay for a quick night flick. After landing about half a dozen nice tommies on plastics, along with a couple of tiny trevally, it was time to go. On the way home, a 4x4 with a barcrusher boat overtook us at high speeds. Then another one which looked quite familar? After a second look, I realised it was the Paul's boat, "True Blue" and the Ifish crew! LOL   Hope they didn't hit any wallabies.

The next few days we only fished the river as there were no salmon schools in sight!
We landed over 30 bream on the OSP Bent Minnows including some bruisers that were 35cm+!  We had clear visions on most of the hookups! It was insane!!!!

Overall, it was one of the best holidays I've had! None of it would have happened without one of my best mates, John and his lovely family!

And to finish this new thread, here's the longest video I've made on my YouTube channel!!  Cheers!

ludaqryz reacted to Kuerschie in Yak camera mount
Decided to try and make a camera mount to put on my yak for when I want to take photos and videos whilst I'm fishing. With a very limited budget and limited tools I was able to make up a simple and easy mount that slot's into one of my four flush mounted rod holders. This means that I can alter the angle that I want to shoot at.

First off I had to buy my mount pole which was simple enough, any pole type structure will do such as a PVC pipe. I bought a cheap prawning light that was plastic and the head of the pole was to be used as the ideal mounting point. Second thing to buy was a pool noodle, and that's all I had to buy. I run a GoPro Hero 3+ so I used a few spare mounts from that to secure my camera to the pole.

Firstly I removed the globe and head casing of the light and then took out all the wiring and the crappy handle.

Next thing was to mount the GoPro mount using a few drilled holes. Hole wasn't quite big enough but a small square file got it to fit snugly. Secured the mount with a cable tie as I'd like it to be removable for when I take the camera underwater snorkelling.

Once that was complete I was just a matter of attaching a small length of the pool noodle for floatation in case I capsize. Also the colour of the pool noodle helps other water users see a lowdown kayak when I'm out on the ocean or river.

To finish off I added a PVC pipe with some drilled holes to be used as rungs to raise or lower the camera pole to change the view. All in all a nifty, cheap and simple way to have a video camera on board. There are other things to add to it or make it simple with just a PVC piping but I didn't have access to any at home. The only thing missing from it is a cleat to be able to use a leash to secure it to my kayak as well.

You could try what I found has been a great reel Siena 1000. Cheaper $38-$59 depending where you buy. Best price was $38 at BCF sale. Had the reel for two years, it gets rinsed fresh and innox spray after each session and still reels like new.
For this price there is no need to really be concerned about knocks and bumps so more focus can be on fishing and I am sure most fisho's that use or have owned one would agree they are worth it and would likely be on par with most other spin reels under $100 or more.

I'm not one for carrying backpacks or drink bottles when river fishing as I like to fish as light as possible. This small item is an essential part of my river fishing.. it's called the Life Straw.

Here's what I carry with me at all times when trout fishing the rivers since suffering a severe stomach & bowel infection from drinking the water direct from the rivers here in Tassie..I finished up being on a special Government authorised script for two weeks. It's called a Life Straw and it's used in many countries around the world where the drinking water is polluted. It filters 99.99999% of bacteria etc out of the water as you suck the water up through it.. I've always drank the water straight out of the rivers when trout fishing until the day I became very ill. It hit me around 5 hours after getting home from the Leven River after a fishing session I had. I did as I normally did and that was to drink the water straight from the river not realising ( or even thinking) about the run off from the paddocks that had cattle in them. We had quite a bit of rain several days earlier and I didn't even give it a thought.. I do now and that's why I spent $28.00 on the Life Straw which I have used for nearly two trout seasons now. It can filter 1000 litres of water so it's will last me quite a few seasons yet..

    cheers
    Adrian
