Burke, reading between the lines, effectively seems to be saying that he`s hopeful there will be minimal collateral damage re seals, dolphins etc.Interesting how a shark fishery area was closed down in SA over one sealThe recently closed zone, part of the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery, covers an area of 18,500 km2 off Coffin Bay in South Australia. AFMA also closed zones A and B to fishing earlier this year following sea lion deaths in those zones. yet the Feds seem to be a lot more flexible? Oh wait, so is AFMA, it would appear. Obviously, when it suits.AFMA works hard to ensure that fishing operations don’t harm the environment, including sea lions and dolphins, but makes arrangements that allow fisheries to stay open as much as possible so that fishers can continue operating.Follow the money...it seems some seals and dolphins are more equal than others when there is sufficient $$$$ at stake.http://www.afma.gov.au/2012/04/afma-closes-further-areas-in-the-shark-gillnet-sector-to-protect-sea-lions-and-dolphins/But it`s...complicated....The Margiris, Dutch owned, currently Lithuanian flagged but to be reflagged in Oz, a vessel from a pelagic fishery fleet business, operating with the assistance of subsidies, will be fishing in Australian waters, for a portion of the total quota of certain species, over the derivation of said quota there being some controversy, with some Oz crew to be employed on board, to catch fish for cheap sale to Nigeria, in the vicinity of which nation fish stocks have been depleted...by vessels such as the Margiris. Although Nigeria may not be entirely blameless here, just quietly?http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=+nigeria+fish+stock+depletion&source=web&cd=8&cad=rja&ved=0CE8QFjAH&url=http%3A%2F%2Fblogs.worldwatch.org%2Fnourishingtheplanet%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2011%2F05%2FBusiness-Day-Nigeria-fisheries-sustainable-acquaculture-Nourishing-the-Planet.pdf%3Fcda6c1&ei=ck9AUPRnia2IB-HogKAE&usg=AFQjCNHHXo9wNpjZ9JmAbfSuw8rRzmI68QOr maybe it`s just too dangerous to fish in that part of the world nowadays?http://www.afriquejet.com/illegal-fishing-nigeria-2011122930601.htmlAnd isn`t it ironic that the Greens, being ideologically in favour of one-world-governance and global wealth and resources redistribution, are against the Margiris fishing in Oz waters on environmental grounds...just a little duplicity and political opportunism there perhaps? As I said - it`s "complicated".

Quotas, quotas quotas, everybody is talking about quotas. Lets just forget about quotas for a minute and think about who is going to catch what and who is going to make all the money out of this.If there is such a big market out there for our fish why in the hell arent the australian fishing boats going for it.Whats wrong with our boats that they cant or wont go after such a lucrative market, they did with the TUNA and they did with ROCK LOBSTER,why in the hell cant they do it with the mackeral and the redbait. If our boats decided to go after these species, and market them o,seas then the money goes into AUSTRALIAN pockets instead of OVERSEAS POCKETS and there would be a far greater control over catches by people who do give a damn about our fisheries and where it is going and its sustainabilty .

I'm more worried about that fact it can take its quota from one area with one swoop. Considering the biomass ranges from the wa to qld/NSw border. It's quota is 18000 but it can hold 19000. What's to stop it taking its Quota from one area and wiping out said areas population of fish?

The old knife handle is definitely a good one. I've also added a twist, or upturn to the ends for a bit more action in the lure. Don't know if it works, or if it's even needed, but I like to tinker around!! You can also use long bean(running) sinkers. Wire through them and hammer the sides flat. I saw this in a magazine somewhere.

Yeah Im a bit like Snake. I try to use mono in the surf as much as I can. Ive grown up with braid a fair bit so the stretch in mono gives me the $hits sometimes. All my other outfits have braid and leader, even my bottom bashing bait outfits. Guess im too used to braid to go back to mono.

Out in the country we had no choice but to use Telstra 3G. Their plans were always a bit poo, but we had too put up with it. They have lifted their game a fair bit with some of the new plans they have out now. Optus have definitely put a few towers up in country locations, and are advertising on the local TV now, but Im not sure if the system is all up and running.Cant help you with city coverage,as Ive always been Telstra 3G

rooboy123 got a reaction from adamw in how to rig a knife jig ?
I like to use a good swivel and attatch the jig to that. It saves the leader tying direct to the split ring and avoids any chance of the split ring edges cutting into the leader. Some people like to have the assist hook connected directly to the swivel and then the jig attatched to the swivel independant of that. I think the idea is that if the split ring on the jig fails your hook is still on the line. Ive never done this but the theory of it sounds good. Dont know about the rubber band trick, I havent tried that one.

We've always believed to chase salmon on dropping pressure. I think that comes from my mate reading about the fishes bladder decreasing. Dont know if it really makes a differnce, but it sounds like a good theory to tell the cook while we're rushing out the door

i have never found that i need to "crank" my line in fast to catch sambos... mine have all been at a medium wind and have caught salmon all over sa with this method.. and i only use my saros 3000 on my angler 9ft stealth 4kg rod.. and only need to use 40g lures and get out further then anyone else around me.... Mully Madness uses 2-4kg boss rod with a 3000 penn applause and only using 40g lures using the same method and we have been the southern sambo assulters for the last two weeks... Infact all the bangers use between 7-9 foot light rods.. with 3000 size reels and people around us are using surf rods and still cant get the distance out
