projoe reacted to Des in Winter Yellow Fin Whiting Log
Noting a few recent posts enquiring after Yellow Fin Whiting, I thought I would put up some general info regarding a species I have obsessed over for a while, along with a part log for this winter so far.Yellow Fin Whiting are available all year round. There are independent resident populations in the St Vincent Gulf, Spencer Gulf and in WA from Albany through to Shark Bay.The is no migration between populations.Yellow Fin Whiting follow the COLD WATER. At various times of the year you will find them in the part of the gulf that have their natural habitat, but were the water is COLDEST. So I track them all year round, up and down the gulf following the water temperature.By the start of April they would have disappeared from the Adelaide beaches and moved north. This catch was at the end of April in a "middle" part of the gulf. Flathead are a nice by catch, but disappear along with the baitfish when the water gets too cold. However Yellow Fin whiting are still found in the cool water shallows. I manage regular catches through May and June. But it is the Bloodworm runs that really concentrate their numbers into the shallows. And it is then that the better size fish are more abundant. This catch was in the middle of the July bloodworm run.Another bag at the end of JulyThis bag in the middle of the August Bloodworm runAnd I recently managed to find a day with light winds! Which resulted in this bag.Now it is not just us recreational fishers that get stuck into the Yellow Fin Whiting in winter. The graph below from a study in 2000 shows the large majority of the professional catch taken in winter months.Cheers Des

projoe reacted to Meppstas in Tasmanian Floods, Photos from this morning.
Here's a few photos that  took this morning from a few places where I could get to the Mersey & Dasher Rivers. One dairy farmer who I know very well had 300 dairy cows swept from his property early this morning when the river rose well above what was predicted. He had moved them to higher ground too, but in the end it just wasn't high enough. I was hard seeing them struggling in the flooded water, with most of them not making it. I did see several that had made it out, these were scattered in several paddocks some two kilometers down stream. I reckon he may have lost at least 250 head though which was a shame. It's something I hope not to see again at all, very distressing that's for sure. We were cut off at both ends of Sheffield early this morning from farm dams over flowing big time. A few roads and bridges were also washed away, 216 mms of rain in 9 hours.

I have put a few photos of the same areas to compare the difference from normal river flow to major flooding.

    From this .. Dasher River.

    To this..

Dasher River on a normal day..

    Dasher River today..

To think I normally wade up through here, but usually when it's 3.0 meters lower.

The Dasher on another normal day..

     Much different today..

The Mersey River at Merseylea, this was taken early August, the river is still a meter or so higher than normal..

    The same area today..

The new bridge well under water, the last bridge was washed away three years ago when they said it was a 100 yr flood, they're saying the same again today..
Does this mean we get a 100 yr flood every three yrs now???

This road is where I go and fish above the old wooden bridge at Merseylea.. can't get near it today.

I zoomed in to where the bridge is supposed to be and spotted two survivors which was good to see, they should be okay where they are hopefully.
Note the bridge handrail on the RHS, that's all what's above the water..

Wattle tree down on the bridge over the Dasher River..

Pump shed under water as is the farm house on the RHS just out of picture, the owner was with me and I didn't want to take a photo while he was there.
He was very distressed, poor bugger has had this property on the market for three years now, will be tough selling it after this..

Mersey River spills into farmland, crops all under water.

It looks like you did nothing wrong last time but living in a rain shadow area it going to be pot luck I guess. I think you would have let the dam flourish for a while before putting any more trout in on the next fill so insect life & water plants can establish.
A club i belong to called SAFWAA (south australian freshwater anglers assc) have established about 20 dams on private properties for members to fish (C&R only) with both native & trout in them if your interested you can go to a meeting & see what its all about they meet on the 1st tuesday of the month in town at the adelaide police club, next meet tho is the AGM will be a busy one me thinks.

hey good to hear from you again mickyj, dont worry to much over the size reel you are using as long as you happy with it. I have gone down the same path early days of lure fishing & braid line loved the 1000 size shimano's & others. I have upgraded in recent times & purchased a couple of 2500 sized reels somewhat for slightly heavier braids. Their has been a couple of write ups in the fishing mags over the last few months on why 2500 reels are better for light braids but I will stick to me 1000 sizes its a good buzz hearing those small spools spin on a good fish.

So with the change we had the other day and checking the radar there was signs of lightning that could be heading through Adelaide. I checked the radar after I finished work and saw that most of the lightning was down the south coast, So i didn't worry about it.

Then i get a message from my mate to get down the beach as the lightning was coming. SO raced off to Porties and met up with him. By the time I got there it was gone and my mate left, i thought id hang around to see if anymore was on it's way.

I am glad i stayed! Even though I waited and sat through the periods inbetween flashes which was nearly 4 hours and not having my remote on me to use bulb mode for long exposures. I managed to come up with these 3 crackers.

Now bare in mind that there has been no editing or photoshop, this is how it came straight off the camera! Im pretty impressed with how they turned out.

    Hope you enjoy.

Not sure Panga, all I know is Telstra is yet to connect him up with same or different number (I'm guessing it will be the same).

    Number 224 (Seaford Rd Seaford)

Those travelling South will need to turn right onto Seaford Rd (where new Bunning store is), go over Commercial Rd and will be on the left next to Foodland store.

The Scene Fishing at Old Noarlunga has moved onto Seaford Rd Seaford. (next to the small Foodland shop).

Opening doors today (1.3.16) but no phone as yet until Telstra connects it.

Obviously there will be a lot less traffic going past his door, so if down this way please support Kosta as much as possible - I'm sure he would appreciate it.

I think the theory behind 2500 reals being better than 1000 is that they
    A) have greater line capacity incase you hook a monster
the greater the spool width the less loops of line have to come off to get the same length of line off. That means less friction and fractionally longer casting distance.

I still use the little 1000 reels where I can, they are so much fun to use and are nice light.

Don't know about the rods mate sorry.
