OnkaStompa 2017 was off to an early start yesterday as it always is. A total of around 238 entrants and approximately 298 in attendance. It was a hot day but people still came out and enjoyed a family day of fishing and fun.
The total raised throughout the year and announced on the day was $24,760 with that number to be topped up a little when every last cent was counted. Well the grand total ended up being an astounding $25,181.60.
    The official results...
Champion - Brett Haslett Bream 44.5cm and Mens Title
Women - Lisa Solly Bream 28cm
    Junior - Christina Fontanot 39.5cm
    Mulloway - Caleb Maunder 61.5cm
Other Fish Senior - Peter Hayesman Mullet 35cm
Other Fish Junior - Beatrice Nash Mullet 24.5cm
The BBQ although a bit quiet compared to other years went well with the Strike Hook crew at the helm. Just look at this bunch of legends!
We have Kidney Slapper, Myself, Southie the Banger, Doobie and The Fishing Guru who was an official on the day. A huge thank you to the guys for helping out with the BBQ and continuing the Strike Hook BBQ tradition.

Nigel another legend who has helped at the Bunnings BBQs couldn't make it but still managed to drop in and drop off a very well received frozen drink for us.

While in the BBQ area most of the time, I tried to get out and take a few pics of what else was going on during the day. A few of natures freakiest creatures made an appearance and one of the locals decided it was too boring and just slept all day.

It was great to be part of and so good to put the feet up afterwards.

    You're welcome guys.
@Doodlebug73 I don't have a 4x4 so have to leg it , but good news is they were pretty much right in front of the entrance to the beach from the kiosk. We went a bit to the right away from people swimming, surfing etc, found a bit of our own space and did the pippi shuffle. I think the further you go from the masses the more chance of finding them easier because people are generally a bit lazy walking further & so they're less are likely to have been taken further away. But you don't need to go far to find good ones at the moment.

    Hi all,
Went down to Goolwa on Sunday to collect some cockles for bait now that the season has reopened. The hot weather and light winds made it a perfect day for frolicking among the crashing waves. What was surprising was the average size of the cockles we were gathering, being well over 3.5 cm across (legal minimum size). Got enough to last a little while but well under our quota. Didn't take long because finding legal ones was so easy which hasn't been the case over the last few years. They're now packed and stored in the freezer ready for summer sessions.
Thought I'd do it early in the season before PIRSA shuts it down yet again. We don't eat them anyway & I don't think fish are to worried so I don't see why bait collecting is stopped even if there is microbe contamination detected. Let's face you can get seriously ill from not cooking your food properly & bureaucrats don't monitor the contents of our fridge, anyway that's another story now we're all living in this post common sense world, nanny state, economic dictatorship!
So those of you who like foraging for your own bait Goolwa beach seems to be providing good cockles this year. Bear in mind please just take what you think you're going to realistically use so there's plenty for all and plenty left over for nature to replenish itself.
    Cheers

Try putting on 2 x jags on each line you are using. This can quickly determine what is working on the day. If they are on then double header squid is not out of the question. I love it when this happens. Quick early morning squid session, then move onto other species & hopefully get a reasonable mixed bag.

Poppa Snake reacted to Meppstas in Tasmanian freshwater lobster & Platypus...
Yesterday while heading up to Liena (Mersey River) for a spin session I came across a fresh water Lobster in the middle of the road. It had climbed up a steep bank so it could reach the on the other side of the road. This was because the poor thing couldn't reach a concrete pipe that ran under the road that the creek water flowed through.. It is now in the creek that it was trying to reach.. I was a little worried it may have been run over by a quarry truck that wasn't all that far behind me when I spotted it, lucky for it the truck missed it.. Then today as I was heading back to the car I spotted a Platypus next to the river bank so took a photo of that too.. here's a couple of pic's of some of Tasmania's wild life..

    cheers

Fresh water lobster, a protected species that comes with a $10,000 fine for each one that is found in a persons possession..

And here we have the little Tasmanian Platypus that is quite common in most rivers around the state.. always nice to see them in the rivers..

I have one which after 3 casts nothing so swapped to others. I usually do this till I hook up then throw a similar one to what works under a float on a hand line and swap when it goes quiet again. Must try the black again (if the wind ever stops).

Took these couple of photos yesterday not long after sunrise, was a little late getting the camera out and the sun burnt the mist off quicker than I could get out in the back yard..
Any way decided I'll use these as a test photo on the new upgrade....  Wow !! it's a quick upload which is great and much easier to use...

I'd agree that nets and long lines should be banned in at least St Vincents gulf, its actually a very small body of water and if the commercials can stuff up Spencer gulf like they have its only a matter of time before St vincents rooted. As for Pirsa fixing anything i have very serious doubts that is possible,i think the incompetance and arrogance towards the rec sector  is astounding and i wouldn't trust them to run a chook raffle unless there are some wholesale changes.
What does give me some heart is perhaps we can bypass the duds at Pirsa if we can get Rural councils like Tumby ,Pt Broughton etc to ban netting in their surrounding
waters, any local council knows how much money the rec sector/tourists can bring into a town and if we can get them onboard then half the battle is won.REC fishing is a billion dollar industry better the small towns on Yorkes/West coast get some of that than a few million going into some greedy pros wallet who may or may not even live in the district
                        cheers b

In theory the blanket banning of nets and any other types of commercial fishing sounds really good..... for rec fisherman.  Hell, I'm sure the fishing would even be better for me at my favourite spots if other recs were banned from them too....except for me of course!

But without commercial fisherman I'm not sure how anyone who isn't a rec fisher will get to eat fresh, local fish?  Perhaps everyone else, but us, will be happy to eat the imported stuff....?

In all seriousness what is needed is a pragmatic approach to share the resource between the commercial sector, and recreational fishers.  As alluded by RJ, infighting, emotive shit slinging and finger pointing between recs and pro's isn't working and won't improve the situation long term for either group in my humble opinion.
