Cal got a reaction from bjorn2fish in Why don't I catch fish?
Interesting question....,why dont I catch fish?
I am partly blaming the internet for this dilemma, nowadays  info is hand fed.Back in the day it was fishing reports in the paper, after that it was up to the individual to actually go out ,see what other experienced anglers were doing right, taking in the info, spending time on the water, working out tides, feeding habits, gathering or buying fresh bait, experementing with different rigs...basically doing the hard yards.
You can only be hand fed so much, time on the water= experience ,actually  working things out yourself plus seeing from others  is the key.Plus one thing my Dad always taught me is fish for what is there. No point fishing for salmon trout when everyone around you is catching  say yellowin whiting for example.
    Cheers and all the best.😎

This may help your present situation: perseverance + skill + confidence + luck = FISH. If not then my philosophy is: If I dont have a lure in the water I cant catch a fish 😉. Good luck with your fishing. Regards HBt.

Once you get over the current disappointment, re phrase the question from a negative to a positive.  ie what do I need to do to catch fish?  Any endeavour that requires some skill, research, practice, dedication and a heap of failures will, in the end be more rewarding and character building once the success comes.   🙂
    Cheers

I stumbled upon it online whist looking for a cheaper version of the Knot Assist 2.0.
It looks to be elegantly simple and i like the way it leaves both hands free.

Cal got a reaction from David_C in daly heads, gleesons landing Yorkes fishing tips?
Just a tip kgbeats, the northern end of gleesons is a tricky spot to find if you dont know your way around there, its not a matter of just rocking up,you have to access it via a track on your right ,before you get to gleesons landing itself, then there are several tracks to your left leading in through the dunes and only one of them is the right one,and then you need a 4x4 to get in,or a long long walk. There is another way in to even better beach,at the extreme northern end,and thats also a 4x4 track that leads in from swincers rocks.Same deal with that as well. Not trying to put you off at all just saying.good luck on your trip ,cheers

fg is easy takes about 1-2 minutes in the field and is the best no question, love the sunline pe used it for years but they have ceased making it in white which is a pity. however i find vanish to be crap when compared to other fluro, i use Fammel Rock Fish after trying most of  the others.
                                           cheers b

The FG knot maybe the best,  but in normal fishing situations ,after snags ect what you find is regardless of knot if one of the proven ones tied well ,the leader snaps off near the lure, on the leader and not the braid and continually gets shortened.Reason for this is braid is stronger per diameter, example a 4 lb braid tied to a 6lb fluro leader, the leader will snap every time .If the fluro snaps close to the knot its a retie job which sucks, doesnt matter whether you have an fg knot or whatever, its the LEADER and not the braid that snaps  90 % plus.
Best advice IMO is to tie an extra long leader, that even after snapping a few times keeps a reasonable length and  saves having to tie  the joining knot whilst out on the water, which is nothing but a pain in the dark,in the wind, wading, off the rocks ect ect.

Very interesting site SaltyFlyer, I find it interesting to see the perspective of a person standing next to the shark and the actual measured length of that shark documented. Just recently there was a "6 metre" white shark fimed swiming around a boat and it was apparently bigger than the boat, but I am sure some of these 12 foot pointers look as big or even larger than that one. It is so easy to over estimate the size of these things in the heat of the moment.

And just to show how little we actually know about them, this baby 4 days old caught in the Mediteranian , well genetic tests show these are linked to the Australian population, not the South African ones ,which is closer to there  .

Cal reacted to Knackers in Recycling a lead acid battery for sinkers, is it worth it ???
The lead in old batteries will mostly be in the form of lead oxide and lead suphates. I think you have to melt it with carbon or something to extract pure lead suitable for sinkers. Plus there is lead sludge in there as well. There is a bit on the web about this and the consensus is it is not worth it.

A mate of mine, much older than me, and a very long time ago, found a very large number (100+) of old batteries that had been dumped illegally out in the scrub. They thought of sinkers or selling the lead so they poured all the acid out and restacked the batteries. Then, as you do in the '70s, they set fire to the pile to burn the plastic off. He reckoned there was bugger all lead left that had melted into pools.

Bi carb of soda will neutralise the acid.

Cal reacted to Squidntommies in Brining fillets - how long is too long?
I believe the secret is once you take the fish from the brine (which has done its job in preserving), I rinse the fish in fresh water. I found this stopped that too salty taste. I prefer to smoke them slowly and when finished mix a little olive oil with lemon juice and brush it lightly on the fillets. The oil seems to keep the fish moist.
