    Went use to dye our own too. Some colours worked better than others. Red was especially good. I've even dyed my worms and tommies loved the red ones.

    We have been in the last couple of weeks doing a coloured gent that my father passed down to me back in the 70's and we have been inundated with the response and the results. Over the last 2 weeks we have sold 45 of the red gents and everyone raves about them. I will be doing a winter one as well which was passed down but a different colour. I am doing more of the red ATM and should be available tomorrow. Be patient as it is a long process.

    That's the way it reads to me as well, I have 3 shop bought nets ...2 are large mesh size, about 3inches, and 1 is about 1inch size mesh, so yeah maybe it doesn't matter

    The rules are often by no means clear is my finding...the Fisheries/PIRSA need to simplify/streamline some of the bulldust they

    Cheers mate, going to reline the nets I bought with some HD cargo net of 1inch mesh to make it even simpler. Yes generally the crabs will let go when inverted in the net, but just as often the buggas twist and turn and completely enmesh themselves in the bigger mesh size such as I bought.

    ooooooo....might leave that one alone...he's bigger and meaner looking than I am hehehe

    as said mesh size doesnt matter mate

    a big tip tho if a crab thinks hes free he will let go and try get out so when getting them out grab bottom and top and empty like ur holding a bucket and most times they go straight into the bucket same as undersize 1s dangle upside down over the side and  they will let go

    I don't think mesh size matter. Only mentions hoop size and net depth. It doesn't mention anything about the material the mesh is made from

    QUICK AND EASY COMP!!!

    I liked and shared a Facebook past by Fishing Wholesalers on the Strike Hook page and turns out I won a ticket to the Caravan and Camping Lifestyle Show... Not being my intention to win only share for everyone to enter I went into Fishing Wholesalers today to let them know they could put it back up for the comp. "Nah mate it's all good!" I thought there would be a few Strike Hooker's interested so suggested it would go to a Hooker instead... well the one ticket turned into 2

    A big thanks to Fishing Wholesalers for the tickets! Be sure to check out their Facey page www.facebook.com/FishingWholesalersAustralia their newly launched website www.fishingwholesalers.com.au which looks very cool and drop in to say g'day some time down at 200 Dyson Rd, Lonsdale.

    Now how do you get your hands on these 2 tickets? Simple, just reply to this thread and a winner will be chosen at random (1 post only please). We will leave this running as long as we can to get as many entries but will have to close entries soon to get the tickets to the winner in time.

    Please make sure you can use both tickets or give one away to a friend or family member. We can always pick a second winner for a ticket if you choose to only use one ticket.

    We will figure out the best way to get the tickets to you via PM. It may pay to not be located in Tasmania or live too far away from the metro area for this comp

    Good luck everyone

    Its my lads 13th birthday in March so I have got the boat etc all organised so that morning I can suprise wake his lazy arse up at 5AM(nah he's pretty good ) and tell him to get dressed son where going fishing.....then he will see the boat and hopefully a smile from ear to ear as he will expect its going to be land based.....he loves his fishing and has wanted me to get a boat for a while.

    If all goes to plan this time next year Ill have a nice 15ft+ half cab to comfortably house the whole family when heading out I have a 5 year old boy also plus the missus obviously.

    This boat wont go any further than a few kms out even though its been allot further Im told by previous owner.

    I  find O'Sullivans Beach excellent for many reasons and can launch at all tide times, but Garden Island is OK, just narrow lanes to back down and can get very busy, but the water is very sheltered, however the region is also shallow is spots.....but it's free Dont get too nervous about launch and retrieve, it's really very simple, just common sense...here's some advice..............

    Tip, make yourself a basic list of procedures to follow so you forget nothing, it's easy to forget things when nervous and flustered, particularly if others are waiting to use the ramp.

    LAUNCH............

    1...check bung plugs are in place and secure
    2... tilt motor up so it doesn't bottom out on the ramp or submerged obstacles when entering the water
    3...Untie all tie down straps....but leave winch cable and/or safety chain attached so the boat wont accidentally slide off the trailer when backing down due to the slope of the ramp. { it does happen }
    4...Attach a temp rope to a bow cleat, this will be to stop the boat drifting off when launched into the water, and will be the rope to do the first tie off to the wharf...needs to be approx 10 feet longer than trailer
    5...Make sure you have a shorter rope ready to tie off the stern when against the wharf.
    6...Back down the ramp to submerge the boat to at least the rear roller { your boat should slide off the trailer pretty easy as it's not a heavy craft so should be no need to submerge deeper }
    7...Handbrake on, car in gear or park....a wheel chock at this point is a good safeguard to place behind your vehicle wheel just in case sliding on slime is of concern { cars dont float very well   }
    8...Release the safety chain and/or winch cable....but hang onto or secure the temp bow rope so when the boat goes in the water it is restrained by the rope.
    9...Now simply push boat off trailer, usually requires pushing a bit of up and down jiggle on the bow to get it started
    10...Once off, walk the boat via the bow rope to a mooring cleat on the dock, securing the bow and stern with a shorter rope.
    11... Park trailer..........lower boat motor....start motor...check the motor telltale to make sure it's pumping water, if not turn it off immediately .....now go zooooom zoooom zooooooooom

    RETRIEVE........

    Pretty much a reversal of launch procedure, unwind winch cable,  back the trailer into the water,  so approx 1/3 is submerged or at least so the rear roller is submerged { depending on trailer design } If you dont back in deep enough it will be harder to winch boat up, if not impossible. If you back in too deep the boat may float around quite a bit on the trailer and you may find it hard to keep it straight while winching. Use a wheel chock again if slipping backwards is of concern.

    1...Tilt up the motor.... Untie boat from dock, use the temp bow rope to guide it to the back trailer roller, hopefully you can slide/drag the bow onto at least the rear roller
    2...Clip on winch cable to bow hook
    3...make sure boat is straight and aligned with rollers and bunks
    4...Start winching keeping boat straight { sometimes another person can help do this while you crank away }
    5...Once cranked up to the winch post secure boat with safety chain and now you can remove the temp bow rope.
    6...That's it, just drive off and secure boat for the road

    Garden Island is a very easy ramp to use. You don't get the build up of " traffic ' that happens at other ramps
    Took my boat there the first time I put it in the water years ago.
    When you are cruising around in the water, pay attention to the signs that give the speed limits.

    3 nets / person so this means if you have say 4 people you can have 12 nets But max crabs allowed is 60. If there are only 2 people = 6 nets and 40 crabs.

    They do seem to march as the tide moves but you will still pick up a feed on most tides if you are in the right place at the right time.

    You are not chucking out a bait here yourself, are you?

    How does one morally justify eating a piece of chicken, a steak or any other meat for that matter. I believe most people eat their catch and can justify fishing because of that.

    However I do see that in the future it will be frowned upon to be seen posing for a photograph holding a large dead fish as a trophy. Look in the past, at one stage it was a champion effort to shoot a lion or elephant and stand next to it for a photo, and what about sharks, some years back to catch a large shark and hold its jaws open made for a good newspaper story. Try that now and see the reaction, it is viewed as barbaric by many.

    Anyway, I go fishing and I only kill what I will eat and use, and it tastes good!

    Okay, I`ll bite - a manifestation of inherent human atavistic need which harks back to our origins and development as a species, and has not yet been totally subsumed in all people by urbanisation and "civilisation".
    Exactly the same "need" to interact with the natural world that drives the desire in some (many?) to own pets, go camping and grow one`s own vegies. Merely on a different level.   The question itself, of course, infers some sort of reprehensibility in the pastime - which would logically make one wonder whether any person asking such a question would be ideologically inclined towards anthropomorphism - at the extreme end of the scale, typified by hardline animal rights activists who would maintain that even owning a pet is a form of slavery or compensation for some personal deficiency.   One could respond to such a question by seeking justification for asking the question in the first place, merely by saying; "And I need to morally justify my fishing in the first instance...because?"   I am presuming the thread starter was made with the intent of merely gathering opinions rather than engaging in further discussion, and on that basis I personally will continue merely watching this thread without further active participation.
