ChuckTseeker got a reaction from Bait Caster in Best way to avoid losing rigs in rocky spots?
when in the fishing club years ago, on the rocks i would use spark plugs as sinkers, they open up when caught and 90% of the time you get your hooks back, just hook another spark plug to the loop and go again. You will be surprised how they don't get snagged as much too, must be there shape! i also used to have the hook at least a meter off the bottom to try and keep it out of the weed.

But most of the time we float fished, use one of those snapper style floats with the lead on the bottom  tie a bit of wool on the main line to set the depth, check a knot site how to tie it. Let the float sit on a swivel to cast then tie ya leader to the swivel with a hook on it, a foot leader should do and it's then like having an un-weighted bait sitting in the water

    best of luck mate

I have always done best with small Black Nymphs. The Bead head Nymphs get you down, also had good luck with Fuzzy Wuzzy's too. You could also try an Egg pattern with a small size 14 Nymph on a trace tied to the Egg.

If you want to try a dry the ol Red Tag is as good as any

    best of luck

ChuckTseeker reacted to bjorn2fish in Strike Hook SALMON COMPETITION 2016 - Sponsored by SPOTTERS
The long awaited announcement of the Strike Hook / Spotters Salmon comp winners. Probably very frustrating for those in the running for a prize, my apologies.

We had to have a good hard think about a winner with this one. The rules stated that all fish had to be measured and photographed with a measurement tool of some sort. Considering the amount of fish caught by some members we understand this was hard to achieve, taking a photo of each fish while a school is bubbling away is just not going to happen. Something we can improve on in the future.

Going by numbers and size and some kind of measurement in photo we put together a few members salmon posts adding all fish we could see in the photos to come up with a winner.

Major Prize: Spotters prize pack including, very cool cap, sun shade, sunglasses strap and a pair of awesome SPOTTERS FURY (Gloss Black) with Halide lens. I'll also throw in a Strike Hook beanie and neck warmer seeing that it's still cold some days.

    The winner is.... WILDA!!!

Due to the quality of the reports and great information from a certain member we decided on one runner up prize including salmon lures and poppers, I'll throw in a Strike Hook beanie and neck warmer in this pack too.

    Runner up is.... DOOBIE!!!

Well done guys, you caught some great fish and wrote up some very good reports. Thanks for sharing your salmon adventures with us all.

A big thank you to Spotters who sponsored the salmon comp with an awesome prize pack. Head over to www.spotters.com.au and check out their extensive range of polarised sun glasses, I highly recommend Spotters sunnies for fishing. I never go fishing without mine!

    Woohoo

A big congratulations to Wilda, a well deserving winner.

Thanks for enjoying my reports too.

A BIG THANKYOU to Bjorn and others for putting this competition together for all Strike Hook members and also for Bjorn throwing in some S&H beanies and neck warmers (they will come in handy).

Also a another BIG THANKYOU to SPOTTERS for putting up such a great prize pack - the prize will certainly look cool on Wilda I'm sure

The poppers will certainly come in handy and the salmon lures have come at a great time too - keep snagging them lately on all the extra exposed rocks after the storms.

    Thanks again.

ChuckTseeker got a reaction from TheBerg in Eucumbene River! Fly Fishing for Spawn Run Trout Video
Gee 60! Who would have ever thought! LOL! Sounds like it's time for a trip away, doing one of my other favourite pastimes, Fly Fishing for Trout! So it's decided a trip to my long time mate, Tommieee (45 yr's) place in the Bega Valley for my 60th, passing through the Snowy Mountains and one of the Mecca's for Trout in Australia, the Eucumbene River. So a couple of days fishing was included in the trip on the top of Australia. Now after not having fly fished for a long while, let alone in a fast flowing river, let's just say it was a steep learning curve. The fishing is a lot different than our single little still pools here in South Australia. So it was no surprise I had the wrong tackle for the job! Some friendly anglers saw my dilemma and kindly re-rigged my line with the correct gear and it wasn't long before I scored a fish! This became my 60th Birthday Tea and was delicious! + was the only fish kept for the trip. The wind & rain didn't stop much at all for our fishing sessions, but! we did get a calm before the storm when we arrived on the return trip, so I put the Quad up and got some great footage! So sit back grab a drink and enjoy 11 minutes on the roof of Australia fishing for spawn run Trout. Thanks for watching!

    Cheers Chuck

Hi all, this is my first ever report posting here so suggestions are welcome! hope you all enjoy.

    Friday:
Woke up early on Friday and headed to the old man's place to finish packing up the trailer before heading off to Butler's. We left his place about 8am, ready to meet my brother in law and my other sister's partner at Pt Wakefield. On the way, we kept a wary eye on the dark clouds and swaying trees hoping it was a bit calmer down the bottom of the Yorke and we'd be able to wet a line that afternoon..

Fast forward a few hours and we arrived at Butler's. Andrew was as cheerful as ever and after a brief chat we managed to arrange to move from our normal camping spot to one that was a little more sheltered from the wind - Turns out it wasn't any calmer down that way. We unloaded and walked to Salmon Beach. There were some BIG breakers around but a few calmer spots we thought we'd give a go. We stayed for 3 or 4 hours but the only thing making our reels sing was big clumps of seaweed. Ah well, nothing for it but to head back to camp, start a fire, light a cigar and pour a bourbon.

    Saturday:
Saturday morning seemed a bit calmer and we were keen to try again. Again Salmon beach was full of weed but conditions were a bit calmer. No action though, and we went back to camp for lunch and to get a curry going in the dreampot for dinner. We then went down to Butler's beach. I wasn't holding much hope as its only the next bay over and I imagined the weed would be just as bad. Well, I was pleasantly surprised that there was no weed in sight!

We weren't long there and dad hooked a ~45cm salmon and a bunch of tommies and mullet in the shallows. The others only managed a tommy each... and I didn't even get a nibble. Dad's one of those lucky fishers that can go out on a jetty where no one has been catching all day and hook up on the first cast.....hard to love him sometimes! It'd be an understatement to say I was not happy, but hey. That's fishing. A nice hot curry back at camp got me in a better mood (or maybe that was the bourbon?)

    Sunday:
Sunday morning was our last day of the trip. We woke up and cooked up some brekky and discussed if we'd try Butler's beach again or maybe leave early and stop at Point Turton on the way back for a flick off the Jetty. It was decided we'd have a look at Butlers and see what the conditions were like. It was calmer again and was a BEAUTIFUL day. So we thought we'd use up the rest of the bait there and see how we were going. Well...5 minutes in, I was on! After watching the acrobatics and a bit of a fight, I pulled in a 60cm Salmon weighing in at 2.5kg. My PB and the biggest of the trip! I was ecstatic! THIS is what it's all about! This was the feeling I'd been chasing! Dad being dad, managed to hook one shortly after, but it was smaller at around 56cm.

Alas! now we were out of bait! We sent the brother in law up to grab some more pillies while we threw around some metals for a bit.. but just as quickly as they came, the salmon were gone... I managed a few more mullet and that was it. Time to head home.

I agree with sbarnden the reel is just a line storage system. I started with a real cheap silstar reel, BUT! that was too cheap and the foot broke so i bought an ABU  Fly Max and still use it today has been a great little reel. I did upgrade to have a better reel when my mother went to England years ago and got me a Scientific Angler "System 2" reel dirt cheap with no taxes   which is a very nice reel and worth the extra money!
I got into Saltwater Flyfishing and bought an Okuma Integrity I 10/11 that reel has been ok for what i wanted BUT! the finish is not that good and i must of not cleaned properly sometime as it has a little corrosion on it doesn't affect the reel just looks a little dodgy   Matched to an ABU Gold Max IM6 Graphite rod the combo wasn't that dear, picked the rod up when fishermans paradise closed to move shops
As sbarnden said spend as much as you can on the rod it is along with the line the most important bit! I went with a quality Killwell rod from New Zealand for my main rod and matched with my System 2 reel makes a great light outfit.
I have always used Cortland fly lines but there are many good brands out there. I would go with the simple Double Taper line to start with then move on to the line that best suits the conditions you fish, slow sink,, quick sink, weight forward, intermediate, etc etc. Love my fly fishing wish we had rivers and lakes like the other states

    hope this helps a little
