dutchy reacted to Rod in How do I smoke Tommy's?
    G'day
I do all my smoking in a larger hark smoker but do have one of those small 3 burner ones.   I've only used it once and I can tell you that using all 3 burners is much too hot 🤣
I devised my own simple method that gets all thumbs up from those that try it.   Take some soy sauce, sweet chilli and some brown sugar, mix it together in kind of even amounts, brush it on the fish, for tuna I leave it overnight but tommies an hour would be enough but longer won't hurt (I'm thinking you'll have fillets?).  Get the smoke going, you would need the vent open to keep the heat generation.  I would think 20 mins would be enough, but make sure it is cooked (hot).   This is hot smoking, basically cooking the fish with some smoke flavour  and you want to make sure it's cooked.  Cold smoking is a completely different preservation process.  I used to use brine like everyone says and it completely spoils it in my opinion and just adds more work.  Saw dust is what they generally recommend for those little smokers.
Experiment with the burners, I think getting that even and a nice temperature will be the toughest part.
    Cheers

dutchy reacted to yellow door 1 in Decoy Dancing Jacks - assist hooks
Since I bought this $7 set of digital luggage scales - I test all my tackle to see what it can handle so there are less surprises out on the water. Its better to break a product during testing than on a fish

I test braids, leaders, jigheads, snaps, trebles, drag settings etc.

Its very comforting to know exactly how hard you can pull and what your tackle can do.

There will still be some surprises out on the water like crushed hooks - opened snaps and unexplained breakages - but if I know I can dead lift a 2kg fish out of the water but a 3kg fish will max out my jighead - it saves some heartache

    Rotare touched on three things which seem to be under the radar for most people;

    1. I have always cringed at the supposed argument of "get a feed of fish for the family" - it is a recreational pastime, not some form of subsistence necessity.

    2. Likewise, the bleating about "not worth putting my boat in the water for X whiting or Y snapper" - it is a recreation, not an expense-neutral exercise let alone a defacto money-making venture. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy a $50K (or whatever) boat in the first place. And if cost per se is the main determinant in terms of "a feed of fish", much cheaper to go to a seafood outlet than do it from your own boat.

    3. There is a difference between being "as firm as circumstances allow" and "absolutist-combative on principle" when it comes to representation. The latter, whilst all well and good in a sympathetic audience echo-chamber, is hardly an advisable approach to take (for the sake of professional image and credibility for a start) when dealing with the likes of government departments.... who are the ones who will make final determination regarding any rule changes in any case.

To add another consideration to what Wahoo said - those who constantly push the theme of "what have RFSA done for us" would do well to keep in mind that, for instance, the RFSA rep at the much-derided Marine Parks "secret meeting" was in no small measure responsible for SA ending up with closer to 6% than 10% SZ content.
But the nature of the beast is what it is - "wins" are relatively infrequent, at best the wolves are kept from the door for the most part.
The new RFC (or is it RFAC now?) will have to put up with all the same stuff...

    Dave,
I reckon most rec fisherman would welcome a better level of representation.  However what I reckon has been a turn off by many is the behaviour by some of the representative groups.  Tit for tat shit slinging online, the lack of open conversation of different views and opinions, hard line views, then the total alienation with the commercial sector.  Perhaps this is what some people think is needed?  Personally I feel that a much more collaborate and pragmatic approach is required, which isn't where we are headed IMHO.
I'd like to also respond to some of your points in your previous posts:
I would, and do.  I have the 20ft boat and the 4X4. The effort to drive down to Cape Jervis and chase tuna, is not much more than launching the same boat and fishing the passage for snapper.  Most people who make the effort to chase tuna, don't just chase tuna.  Throughout the day they'll come across nice bits of bottom structure whilst trolling and stop and have a fish.  More often than not a tuna trip will see you come home with your esky not only filled with tuna, but nannies, snapper and trevally.  Then there's the by catch that you get whilst trolling, including big arse salmon, snook and the occasional kingfish.
If people are travelling that far, chasing tuna only, then they're doing it all wrong....
See, your response here is typical and is exactly the point I was making at the start.  It's the condescending tone and your point that Jay R must have some hidden agenda.  He stated his position, yet why the need to question it?  Perhaps it's because he has a different take on things than you?
And again.  I'm guessing you must know Jay R well to know how often he's fishing?  Or are you just speculating as it supports your argument?
If your justification for going fishing is based purely on kilo's of fish you can catch..... you're fishing for the wrong reasons.  If you're worried about the cost per kg of fish you catch, just buy it from the market as I can guarantee it's more cost effective and much less effort than catching it yourself....
Once again you're implying that Jay R has some hidden agenda because his experience is different yours.  Why don't you just say you think he's lying and he's likely a commercial fisherman?
If you're talking about acting like the unions have in Australia, all the best with that approach as history shows how well that worked for most longer term.
Anyways, I'm not trying to be argumentative.  Just pointing out that there's some interesting behaviours and common tactics often played out in these discussions and hence why many people are simply turned off from positively contributing.
    Cheers.

At my time working in the tackle shop i sold countless Daiwa BGs for guys wanting them for a range of species and had all positive feedback from them customers.
Only issue i saw was the drag clicker broke but that was replaced.
Have seen plenty of Snapper Tuna Kingfish even Sharks caught on them.
Even Alan Hawk gives them a great reel!
Only downside for me was i love power ball handle knobs. The Daiwa BGs handle knob is riveted. There are ways to get around it but other than that they are a great reel!

You'll be lucky to find a reel with a spare spool these days, especially in the general beach reel size range.
Budget will determine just how much of a beach reel you'll get. Most of the decent reels under $100-$150 are more freshwater focused. Would be okay for general saltwater use if given a light hose down after, but less so for sand a heavy splashes from the surf. That Rapala is more of a jigging/offshore reel, I believe.
For around the same as you paid for the Rapala, a Quantum Iron 50 should be lighter, has a decent spool lip for casting and good salt protection (only basic sealing like drag knob, though). Can get them for around $100. Spool diameter is slightly larger than Shimano 5000.
The new Quantum Smoke Inshore S3 is about $170 with a reasonably quick (6.0:1) gear ratio, lighter than the Iron and similar salt protection. Very good drag.
For better sealing, you're looking at probably Shimano Spheros or similar. Also heavy like the Rapala but Shimanos usually cast very well. If you want lighter and/or cheaper, or faster gear ratios then you'll be giving up on sealing and some salt protection and looking at stuff like the Nasci 5000.

I just got my new r type 6500 $89 delivered 😁 with 2 yrs of fishing porn
I was after a beach reel for lures salmon etc
I don't think this is the one..
A heavy beast more suited to deep reefs etc out in the boat I think
Anyone used one before or any opinions?
What reels do you recommend for long casts & high speed lures
Probably 15lb braid spare spool would be great...

So as some of you know I worked at Fishing Wholesalers for the last 2 and a bit years.
However my last day was on Saturday. I know there are alot of members on here that i have put onto this site that i wasn't able to let know of my resignation as it happened so quick.
So i thank you for being great customers to me.
I am no longer in the fishing industry anymore. I might return to it in a few years time if things go right
However you will now find me in the electrical industry as a storeman in town.
Now to enjoy fishing like i use to without the pressures of the industry
Expect more reports me in the near future!

dutchy reacted to southie THE BANGA in The Best Squid Jig?
    Right so here goes.
This is my personal opinion. Everyone has there own theories or the must have colour.....
However what works for me are 3 main factors.
    Number 1:
Colour choice. It is not so much the colour that I am looking into. I am looking at how much UV properties a certain jig has. Squid are supposedly colour blind so they don't see colours however they see shapes and patterns from shadows and contrasting colours. When any light form hits a UV jag it creates a shadow/pattern that the squid can see easily. Uv Jags work well at night and on bright days..... On overcast cloudy days a dark more neutral colours creates contrast and that is what the squid see.
    Number 2:
Jag Size. I am landbased and alot of my waters i fish are shallower grounds. I believe Jag size is of massive importance. Imagine using an 3.5 jag in shallow waters. It means that it sinks quicker and gets down to the bottom quicker which means that you have to work the jag back faster. On average a 3.0 size jag will have a sink rate of 3 seconds per metre. I use nothing bigger than a 2.5 size jag and go as low as a 1.6 jag in real shallow waters. A 2.5 jag has a sink rate of approx 6 seconds per metre so theoretically the light the jag the longer sink rate time, the more time it is in the water so you can cover alot more water for alot longer.
So use a jag thats going to work in the waters you are fishing.... if you are out deep obviously you wouldn't use an 2.0 jag as the current and the deeper water wont get down to the bottom....
    Number 3:
Make sure you get the jag as close to the bottom as possible without getting snagged. I see it on so many occasions. People have jags under a float and you can see the jig under the water. Or even when working it back. Squid wont come up high to eat food in the water column. They know they are getting preyed and hunted on so they hide amongst the weed and cover of semi shelter.
So they are the main areas i concentrate on when squidding.
Also consider getting getting a better quality squid jag as they not only work differently, but also swim/drop more naturally and the components are generally better.
Yo Zuri, Daiwa, and yamashitas are my go to jags with The Yo zuri HS being my go to colour. Next time you are in the shop run a uv torch over a Yo zuri HS jag and you'll understand why it is probably the most popular jag aswell as the Red white head Yo zuri.
    Hope this helps

Could be a bit of moisture or grit/shit stuck in it causing it to slip and not work.
From memory it needs to be dry and clean. Maybe take it apart and haveca look see or just order a new anti reverse bearing and replace it...
90% of reel repairs go to Rob wilson at south oz rods. If you take it direct to him it can be done in a few days. If you take it to a tackle shop it could be a 3 week turn around as it goes to a middle man before getting picked up by rob to look at it.
