archerfish reacted to doobie in Fishery staff need to catch up on rules.
Whilst down on the Port Noarlunga jetty this morning, Fisheries made a visit about 8ish.

People at the end of the jetty, but within the legal fishing area, were fishing and crabbing.

Fisheries had a brief chat to them before moving on.

Later I went up to them just to mention that crabbing was not allowed on the jetty as it classed as an aquatic reserve.

They advised that the Fishery guys did not know if they could use crab nets or not, so let them be.

I advised they need to check the PIRSA site to confirm what I said and they were all fine with what I said, but as Fisheries didn't give them a definite answer they would keep crabbing.

I accept that the signage at the beginning of the jetty is not very informative about the rules and the signs towards the end of the jetty are a bit confusing, but hell, should Fisheries know the rulles - especially for th is on non crabbing jetty.

    Rant finished!

So I don't usually keep Bream, but a nice sea run specimen makes for a very tasty meal. This one was caught on Saturday morning, marinated in lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, chilli, oregano, salt and pepper during the day and then cooked over charcoals that evening. Was absolutely beautiful. Outdoor cooking... with beer in hand... oh yes.

It's unfortunate that a new product should be giving you so much grief already, TheBerg...

However, if you wish to persist with it, try a product called "nilodor" (available in most large supermarkets). If THIS doesn't kill the smell, then you really should consider purchasing another brand of vest...

The Scene Fishing at Old Noarlunga has moved onto Seaford Rd Seaford. (next to the small Foodland shop).

Opening doors today (1.3.16) but no phone as yet until Telstra connects it.

Obviously there will be a lot less traffic going past his door, so if down this way please support Kosta as much as possible - I'm sure he would appreciate it.

Let's not start this kind of stuff up again. Strike Hook has been a much better place without all of the argumentative, political, slinging of crap at each other.

SAFA, you have a dedicated section of the forum to post in where no one else can comment. If you don't use that section it is up to you. RecFishSA, PIRSA, DRFC all have dedicated sections of the site where they can post and no one else can comment.

The restrictions were put in place so there wouldn't be any stupid, keyboard warrior, arguments. Political discussion is still restricted on Strike Hook. This was caused by member behaviour. If you want to argue and point fingers, go elsewhere.

Keep Strike Hook a friendly, fun environment where we talk about actual fishing and it will flourish as is proven since the political topic ban.

archerfish reacted to brenton in Pickled squid
Here's a recipe for pickled squid that i use for pickling all the left over bits such as the flaps and tentacles. Its easy as but the squid takes a little bit of preparation before you start.First up i like to freeze the squid so you can pickle it when you want and also it breaks up the structure of the squid to make it more tender. Then i like to peel the skin off the flaps and chop up the tentacles(even the bit behind the head is tasty). Now to make up the brew here's what you need
    white vinegar 1 litre
    lemon juice a decent splash
    crushed garlic 1 teaspoon
    chilli 1 teaspoon
1 bottle of praise italian dressing
    black pepper
    mixed italian herbs 1 teaspoon

now put all of it in a saucepan and bring to the boil and chuck in your first batch of squid bits and bring back to the boil for 1 minute and then remove the squid,if you have anymore chuck that in and do the same etc etc this adds flavour to the brew as well as blanching the squid.

now chop up the squid into bits

This is "important" you must let the pickling mixture cool right down or it will overcook your squid
when cool chuck the squid in jars and pour the mixture over the top put in the fridge and resist the temptation to sample your squid for 4 days then get stuck in,you can add more chilli or pepper etc but don't use salt or it will toughen your squid.......Enjoy

archerfish reacted to Seeseacol in Leader keeps tangling with feeder float when casting.
Here's a very unorthodox Gar rig that works remarkably well when long casting for surface fish is the go.  This rig as odd as it seems was shown to me by some local fishos who fish the Seaford area from shore. Using this rig made such a difference to catching very little in this region to catching a good bag every time. I presume it may be just as effective anywhere else, but Seaford is where it originated.

The idea is simply attach a berley float by one hole only, why does it work so well ???....I think it's simply a case of the float tends to waggle a bit more in this configuration therefore releases a little more berley a little more often, The waggling float I presume also makes the bait { Gents } beneath jiggle a little more as well....but this is my theory, but whatever the reason it does work well at least for the  shy Seaford fish. I have never got a tangle from using this rig either even with very long shore casts.

Had a crack at preserving tuna this arvo. It is a little time consuming but tastes great and can be kept for over a year so perfect for when you have plenty of tuna.

Ingredients are sea salt, water, Italian mixed herbs, olive oil and tuna.

All you do us boil large chunks of tuna in a salt water solution which is 35 grams of salt to one litre of water.

Once the tuna is cooked flake it into sterile jars, cover with oil and some herbs to taste. Boil your jars for a couple of hours to complete sterilisation process. Apparently it gets to it full taste potential after 1 month in the jar but damn it tastes great straight up. Perfect for on crusty bread or in pasta.

    We all love fishing, right?

Apparently I don't like fishing any more - at least that's what I've been told by someone with more authority than me, but here is a ready to go fishing package - just hitch up, drop her in the water and go fishing the day you buy her!

Oh, and I meant drop the boat in the water - not your wife. Dropping wives in the water is apparently not appropriate and/or appreciated. And if you can buy a suitable wife - good luck to you. I've already bought and sold one wife, still paying for the later model and have no desire to find out what it would cost me to sell her (the wife, not the boat).

And the best news is you don't need a big tow vehicle - she can be towed behind a typical family sedan like a Commodore or Falcon! The boat is also the right size for towing behind a family sedan.

You might have guessed I'm really disappointed to be selling my boat, but my wife has decided that the caravan is more important, so this great boat package simply has to go.

She (the boat, not my wife) has seen very little use due to business commitments and my wife's desire to travel in the caravan instead of going out fishing. And let's be honest - if I don't sell the boat to get the caravan SWMBO wants, then I'm not likely to see much use out of my wife either.

A really comfortable and stable boat - the cabin is big enough for two to sleep in and there is heaps of storage space inside the cabin and also on deck. Rock solid fibreglass hull.

Please note that these are all words that should not be applied to your wife - comfortable, stable (as if!), big enough to sleep two, heaps of storage space and rock solid. These descriptions are only about the boat. Please, you have to believe me!

This package is complete and ready to go and includes:

    - UHF (27 MHz) radio

    - all required offshore safety equipment including life jackets, flares, bucket, EPIRB and so on (ask me nicely and I'll even give you a life jacket for the missus)

    - Lowrance LCX-37C colour combination chartplotter and fishfinder (not that you need a chartplotter - apparently wives always know where you are and where you should be)

    - Bimini with clear sides and front

    - rod holder on the bimini

    - bait board (never used, at least not by my wife)

    - bilge pump (electric)

    - 100 litre underfloor fuel tank (which I will make sure is full)

    - Sea Trail galvanised trailer (with new winch)

    - PortaPotti toilet (for the wife's comfort and your peace and quiet)

    - anchor (should not be attached to any person, especially your wife)

She (again, the boat, not the wife) is equipped with a 90HP Evinrude E-Tec outboard, which starts first time, every time. Heaven only knows what life would be like if my wife's mouth was as reliable as this motor.

A 20 litre drum of E-Tec oil (worth over $300) also comes with the boat because we all know how important proper lubrication is and so you won't have to worry about buying lube, I mean oil, any time soon!

As an added bonus we'll even throw in our tow tube which is shaped like a jet ski and you'll also get the tow bridle and tow rope. Capable of carrying three people, this tube is a bundle of fun and gets comments everywhere it goes.

I have found that the tow rope is long enough to effectively mute your wife's screams too!

Went for a Sunday drive to Thompsons Beach today, not crabbing or the like, just for a cruise.

Seen someone drive way out onto the mudflats presumably to get closer to the crabbing action.....not something I would do. No idea who it was or if there was any dramas in doing so, but really makes you wonder about buying secondhand 4WD's sometimes

Was chatting with one of the locals patrolling the area who was telling me they get a lot of cars hopelessly bogged, 8 so far this summer, one suffering extensive damage from front wheels being torn off as it was being winched out of the mud. Seems there is some money to be had retrieving bogged vehicles down that way, and one of the locals charges $800.00 fro retrieval fees and if the car need towing to Dublin for repair there is another $200.00 to load it onto a vehicle trailer.

    Not for me thanks !

    { must say there were so many people out crabbing from Thompsons to Port Parham it's makes you wonder just how many they catch between so many hopefulls }
