we dodged the last of some fires on the nullarbor.. then hit Pemberton, Nannup, Manjimup Marg River etc... and basically ran where we could. had one of our guides parked up for a couple of days smack in the middle of a couple fires. lucky no crew on board just him. had food and a sat phone.. was happy to stay at the banks of the river he was camping at. asked me if i was joining him for the night.. he wasnt even aware of how bad the fires or how close they were to him.. made it out all safe though. but many of our prospective camp sites around that area were burnt out. was some awe inspiring scenery thats for sure! ill be driving through the area in a week or so.. looking forward to seeing the aftermath.

Amazing! 11 pages and going... although everyone is and has put up good arguments over the pros and cons of shark fishing on metro jetties and the beurocrats will in the end - have their way one way or the other,I'm going to dumb it down a bit and although some might not agree - and thats your choice - give you one mans opinion...1. The old fella that took it upon himself to use his age and "local-ness" to abuse the shark fisherman for fishing on "his jetty"???? - broke the law.......If you are angry about life for whatever reason - see a therapist! dont take it out on others....If you approach anyone - abuse them - touch their personal property - and threaten?? That is breaking the law.... can just imagine what would have happened if the tables were turned and the sharko did that to the old man! Anyway - the story goes the "local" police knew the old man and so decided to "believe" and take his side and overlook what happened? why? Because he is old???? frail??? a respected member of the community??? (again my opinion sounds like the police need to go back to police school and re-learn the rules)....2. Bronze whaler shark - diet - fish, squid, offal... White pointer shark - diet - seals, dolphins, fish, other sharks, whales, offal...Fact: In the fiji islands shark fisherman use "rattles" to lure sharks (a stick with coconut shells cut in half and piled on top of eachother) then sort of "shuck shucked" in the water and it brings them to the boat - sounds like a fish thrashing or a (SWIMMER splashing) sends them crazy....The point here is that the sharks will first be lured to the commotion in the water by the swimmers - they will "feel" the vibrations and come in for a look....(that is what a shark does).....BUT

picked up a couple new rods from an old fella dying of cancer. he also chucked in a "small" box of hooks which contained about 1000-1500 hooks from size 6 up to 8/0 but mostly in 3/0 40/5/0 sizes and 4 big halco twister salmon lures.. for an exrtra few bucks..the golden red one ill keep, but gave softy the Black one as his first Alvey rod. now to get him an alvey and into something to make that ratchet SCREAM!!!Rods are hand built on Wilson 4120 blanks, 4 wrap, means nice and light with a fair bit of whip, 120 means inches long. with reel seats and spikes both rods sit in the 11'* bracket. perfect for casting baits on a Alvey 650C for salmon snapper or mulloway. and the occasional shark that comes by..

Try a pair of haemostats instead. Medical grade stainless, they never rust, they can attach to your jacket so you dont lose them, they come in straight or bent shaft and a range of sizes, they're not as expensive as you would think, they are fantastic for latching onto and removing hooks with a minimum of damage to the fish, even when the hook is lodged fairly deeply and would otherwise be cut off and left.

Del reacted to Moggy23 in PE ratings
And to add to BDO's reply The PE standard of measurement is based on a numbering system known as “gouw”, the system that the Japanese originally used to measure the diameter of silk thread. This measurement system has since been applied to monofilament and braided fishing lines. The “PE” stands for Polyethylene, the fibre used to make Dyneema and Spectra braided lines. The PE rating is a constant measurement, so while two lines advertised as being rated to 50lb may actually test at different breaking strains, two lines with the same PE rating will always be the same diameter. As a very general rule, you can multiply the PE# by 10 to get an approximate breaking strain of a braided line, i.e. PE4 x 10 = 40lb, as it will rarely test below (10xPE#). However, the breaking strain can vary a great deal between different lines of the same diameter. This is especially true in many of the high end braids that use more strands and a tighter weave, resulting in a rounder, smoother finish and higher breaking strain for the same diameter as lines of lesser quality. For instance, YGK Galis Ultra Jig Man X8 in PE5 is rated to 86lb, but Sunline Super PE PE5 is rated to 50lb. Higher end lines are often specialised for either casting or vertical jigging, and usually carry a higher price tag to match their superior finish and higher breaking strain/diameter ratio.

I used and loved alveys for many years, although not much these days.I keep threatening to rebuild my old Len Butterworth MT8144.Stands for multi taper 8 wrap 144 inch long(12 feet).I believe Snyderglass have the mandrills and still roll these blanks. The fine tip allows for casting a large range of weights while the stiff but meens you still have plenty of authority for mullies rays etc.The common set up was a 9 inch but and a long for grip.As a teenager(30 years ago) I caught many large eagle rays off west beach ,the biggest going over 100LB.I still have my old Alvey 650 C5 and it still has the 19lb Schneider line i purchased from Grants tackle shop on Grange Rd over thirty years ago.I have many surf rods these days so the old alvey doesn't get used, but it should. My alvey outfit was probably more versatile and reliable than any of my current outfits. It was great for salmon at waits and Browns if you were willing to wind like a crazy man and drop in the sand could be rectified with a quick wash in salt water.all it ever needed was the odd clean and grease to stay reliable . A short 9 inch but is a must and made the overall length 12 feet 9 inches. An open runner was also a must as was the very large first stripping ring to tame the large coils during casting. One thing is the casting technique requires that the rear hand on the nine inch buy uses the thumb to trap the line and the front hand is placed a fair way forwad of the front grip to punch the cast.Intrerestingly in South Africa Overhead reels are fished the same way off short but rods in the surf.I believe that alvey outfits are one of the most underrated ,under utilised bits of equipment available and will stand up to more punishment than anything else out there.I recon the old mt 8144 is probably still the best rod for the job.Buy one .CheersRollcast

Hey pete!As srick said the local salmon beaches hold them at times! Millers hole, salmon hole, lone pine (basically the whole of sleaford bay) will have them! Give them all a try...I think I'll find the fishing pretty damn good even if your not hookin the jewies! Some of the spots are pretty dangerous if your not careful and remember a cliff gaff for the holes!

Knew Paul Buckland and Jevin Wright from lincoln for many years prior to their attacks on the west coast. its a sad day to hear of another one gone in the local area. we had a girl on my last tour that did the shark cage diving. she saw 3 big whites.. was an experience of her life. one id love to enjoy as well. just hope that the anti shark people dont get on the band wagon and demand these fish to be hunted and killed.

first step.. work out what is exported to other countries. and cut that from the pro licenses quota. as obvisouly we are not catching what australia needs there for we are taking more than required. if we are all for preserveing fish stock for australians then set a maximum exported quota. this country is renowned for raping itself to supply the rest of the world. AT OUR EXPENSE!

I will probably cop some flack for this, but I think that's healthy anyway, so no offense will be taken by me :)I will be the first to support reductions in commercial snapper fishing here. As it should help both the market price for the pro's and the Snapper stocks.BUT, as recreational anglers, we should be responsible and take only what we need, or is reasonable. To a lot of people, a BAG limit is like a challenge, and I reckon they take the BAG because of some kind of trophy element. For example, 2 90cm Snapper is a bloody lot of fish! Also it doesn't taste awesome compared to the ruggers anyway. If you don't get them regularly then fair enough, but to be taking a boat limit everytime you get on them is just greedy IMO. Same as the other species like KGs and Yellowfin. 5 or six of these fish is a nice family feed. In my ideal world, the commercial fishos would be looked after as far as reasonable regulations that preserve market returns for them and protects our resources. And catch and release should be more widely promoted with advice from fisheries about how best to ensure survival for released captures.I know when the summer run of Bream are in in our spot, some guys are out there catching a feed of them. Seeing 10 Bream over 28cm sitting in a bucket makes me pretty sad. And really, a 15 or 20 year old bream that's been living in the Port isn't going to be good for you anyway... Summer run or not!Just my opinion and I feel strongly enough to post it. For me and my family, a couple of big Snapper and half a dozen or so ruggers is plenty feed for the whole of summer. Chuck in a dozen kgs and dozen yellowfin with some blue crabs, and that is more than enough for us to have great feeds of fish all year round really and the freezer is full anyway. And this is nowhere near taking our bag limits. Release all you can and take only what you will actually eat.Cheers and tight lines
